EMILYs List Endorses Bridget Fleming for Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Bridget Fleming for election to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“New York’s 1st Congressional District promises to be a key race in maintaining a Democratic pro-choice majority in the U.S. House, and EMILYs List is proud to endorse a candidate as qualified and passionate as Bridget Fleming. Throughout her career in politics, Fleming has been a champion for tax relief, environmental protection, and access to reproductive health care for all. We know she has what it takes to continue fighting for our values in Washington, and we look forward to supporting her campaign to represent the people of New York’s 1st Congressional District.”

A former prosecutor and Southampton Town councilwoman, Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming has spent her career advocating for Long Islanders. Fleming worked for almost a decade as assistant district attorney in the Manhattan district attorney’s office, fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence and combatting fraud in public programs. She went on to work as managing attorney for pro bono programs at the New York City Bar Association, leading programs focused on homelessness, refugees, cancer, and elder law. In this role, Fleming also helped to train volunteer lawyers in the wake of 9/11 to help out those impacted by the attack. Fleming was first elected to the Southampton Town Board in a special election in 2010, and was reelected to a four year term the following year. She has served on the Suffolk County Legislature since 2016 and is now running to represent New York’s 1st Congressional District. Fleming lives in Noyac, New York with her husband, Bob, their son, Jai, and their dog, Dune.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
