EMILYs List Endorses Abigail Spanberger for Governor of Virginia
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Abigail Spanberger for governor of Virginia. EMILYs List Interim President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Virginians are pushing back against extremist Republicans who want to roll back their rights, and Rep. Abigail Spanberger is ready to fight for our freedoms and forge a new path forward as Virginia’s first woman governor. Virginians spoke loud and clear in November: they want reproductive health care protected in their state, and Abigail Spanberger is the best candidate to get that done. EMILYs List is proud to stand with Abigail Spanberger once again.”
Rep. Abigail Spanberger is an experienced leader currently serving her third term in Congress as the representative of Virginia’s 7th Congressional District. EMILYs List first endorsed Spanberger when she flipped the district blue in 2018 and has endorsed her every cycle since. Spanberger grew up in Henrico County, Virginia, and is a proud graduate of the University of Virginia. She began her career of public service as a federal law enforcement officer working narcotics and money laundering cases with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Following her love of country, public service, and languages, she went on to join the CIA as a case officer and worked undercover collecting intelligence, managing assets, and overseeing high-profile programs to combat terrorism and keep Americans safe. Spanberger spent several years in the private sector before deciding to run for Congress, when she saw partisan politics and division threatening the country she dedicated her life to defend. She and her husband are parents to three daughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
