EMILYs List Congratulates Sen. Tammy Duckworth on Advancing to the General Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Sen. Tammy Duckworth on advancing to the general election in her bid for reelection. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled Sen. Tammy Duckworth is advancing to the general election in her bid to represent the people of Illinois for another term. Duckworth has lived her life the way she leads in the Senate: with courage and integrity. This pro-choice champion has tenaciously advocated for justice, equity, and opportunity for every one of her constituents throughout her time in office. After a hard-won fight to flip this seat blue in 2016, we know that Sen. Duckworth has what it takes to win again in November. We could not be prouder to be by her side again in this critical race to maintain our majority in the United States Senate.”
United States Sen. Tammy Duckworth is a Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a former assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and a former head of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. She served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 2014. Duckworth has remained committed to public service, advocating for Veterans and disability rights and fighting for Illinois’ working families. Fluent in Thai and Indonesian, Duckworth holds a master’s degree in international affairs and a Ph.D. in human services. Duckworth was elected to the House of Representatives in 2012, where she served on the Armed Services and Oversight and Government Reform Committees, and went on to be elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016, flipping a seat from red to blue.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
