EMILY's List Congratulates Rochelle Garza on Advancing to the General Election for Texas Attorney General

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Rochelle Garza on advancing to the general election for Texas attorney general. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List congratulates Rochelle Garza on winning the Democratic primary runoff election in the Texas attorney general race. A ‘lawyer for the people,’ Garza is a lifelong advocate of Texas border communities. Because of her impressive record fighting tenaciously at the intersection of immigrant and reproductive rights, we know she is ready to fight for all Texans as their attorney general. We are confident that she will continue working tirelessly to restore abortion access, combat voter suppression, and fight for immigration justice, and we are proud to stand with Garza in the race for Texas attorney general.”

Rochelle Garza, the daughter of two public school teachers, was raised in Brownsville, Texas. Her brother, Robby, suffered a brain injury during birth and grew up with disabilities while her parents struggled to ensure he got the affordable health care he needed. Garza attended Brown University and University of Houston Law Center before becoming a staff attorney at the ACLU of Texas and a managing partner of Garza & Garza Law, PLLC. As a lawyer, Garza has fought to keep families together during Trump’s family separation policies and has worked to protect reproductive rights for immigrant teens in the Garza v. Hargan case. Garza is active on county and state-wide boards, including Jane’s Due Process, the State Bar of Texas Laws Relating to Immigration and Nationality Committee, and the Cameron County Bar Association. She lives in Brownsville, Texas with her husband Adam, their newborn daughter, and their dog Ramses.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
