EMILYs List Congratulates Patty Murray on Reelection to the U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Sen. Patty Murray on her reelection to the U.S. Senate. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“At a time when reproductive rights are under attack and American families are struggling, we know that we can count on pro-choice champion Sen. Patty Murray to continue defending abortion access and promote an economy that works for everyone in the U.S. Senate. EMILYs List is proud to have been standing with Sen. Murray throughout her three decades in the Senate, and we know she will continue serving our country with distinguished leadership at this critical juncture for our fundamental freedoms.”

Sen. Patty Murray first got involved in politics to fight back against politicians who were trying to cut a preschool program that her kids counted on. When she was told she couldn’t make a difference because she was “just a mom in tennis shoes,” she realized that if she wanted change, she was going to have to lace up those tennis shoes and fight back. Murray decided to run for the school board and then the state legislature to make a difference from the inside on policies impacting families like hers. In 1992, she became the first woman elected to represent Washington State in the U.S. Senate after her election during the historic Year of the Woman, and has continued to be a trailblazing force ever since — becoming the first woman to chair the Senate Budget Committee, the first woman to chair the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and serving as the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested more than $9.8 million in partnership with Senate Majority PAC on a robust TV and digital program supporting Murray in both the primary and general elections, illustrating Murray’s record of fighting for Washington families and the threat her opponent posed to abortion rights.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
