EMILYs List Congratulates Patty Murray on Advancing to the General Election in Washington’s Senatorial Election

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Sen. Patty Murray on advancing to the general election to determine who will serve as Washington’s next senator. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Sen. Murray has been one of the most prolific Democratic pro-choice voices in the United States Senate for nearly two decades, boasting an unparalleled record of fighting for progressive causes and championing American women and families. Her reelection is a crucial part of gaining and maintaining the Democratic pro-choice majority in the Senate. EMILYs List is once again thrilled to congratulate Sen. Murray on advancing to the general election and honored to be supporting her campaign going forward.”

Sen. Patty Murray first got involved in politics to fight for a state preschool program families like hers counted on that was on the chopping block. After successfully rallying parents across the state to save the program, she decided to run for the school board and then the state legislature where she worked from the inside on policies impacting families like paid family leave. In 1992, she became the first woman to represent Washington State in the U.S. Senate after her election during the historic Year of the Woman, and she has continued to be a trailblazing force ever since — becoming the first woman to chair the Senate Budget Committee, the first woman to chair the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, and now serving as the chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee.

Women Vote, EMILYs List’s independent expenditure arm, invested more than $500,000 in a television and digital program in Washington ahead of the primary election. Over the course of two weeks, Women Vote educated voters about Sen. Murray’s work to get Washington back on track, through cutting taxes for the middle class, cracking down on oil and gas companies, and investing in manufacturing jobs.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
