EMILYs List Congratulates Mayor London Breed on Winning Re-Election  as San Francisco Mayor

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Mayor London Breed on winning re-election as mayor of San Francisco, California. EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock released the following statement:

“Mayor London Breed is an experienced leader, passionate community advocate, and the mayor San Francisco needs as they look toward the future. With her proven commitment to implementing real change across the city, Mayor Breed has pushed to expand affordable housing, reduce homelessness, and increase public safety. It’s clear that as San Francisco’s mayor, she will continue to ensure all residents have a fair shot at success and advocate for women and working families. EMILYs List is thrilled to celebrate her victory.”

Mayor Breed made history when she became the first Black woman to be elected mayor of San Francisco. A San Francisco native, London has spent her career serving her community in a variety of positions in public office and has been unrelenting in her mission to make San Francisco a cleaner, safer, and more affordable city. As mayor, she has worked hard to address the ongoing housing crisis and curb homelessness through new mental health programs and increased investment in workforce development. She has also made San Francisco a leader in the fight to combat climate change by leading the transition to renewable energy. Before becoming mayor, London served as a San Francisco Redevelopment Agency Commissioner, a San Francisco Fire Commissioner, and a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, including three years as Board President.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 50,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
