EMILYs List Congratulates Kamala Harris on Becoming the First Woman Vice President of the United States
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Kamala Harris on becoming the first woman vice president of the United States. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“The election of Kamala Harris as the first woman vice president of the United States is not only an historic moment for our nation, but it is a moment of immense pride for the EMILYs List community. Young girls and women across America, and especially Black women who remain the backbone of the Democratic Party, will now see themselves reflected at the highest level of government for the first time. Together with Kamala, and standing on the shoulders of the fearless women leaders who came before us, we have put yet another giant crack in that highest and hardest glass ceiling.
EMILYs List has been honored to stand with such an inspirational and experienced leader as Kamala throughout her career serving at the local, state, and federal levels, and we know she will bring a critical perspective to the White House as we fight to build a stronger, more just, more equitable America. We know her incredible journey will pave the way for more women’s leadership and representation in government and beyond, and we look forward to all that the Biden-Harris administration will accomplish as they build this country back better.”
Women Vote, the independent expenditure arm of EMILYs List, invested $5.5 million in digital ads helping introduce Vice President-elect Harris to women voters in Nevada, Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania. We also ran a seven-figure GOTV mail program to low propensity Democratic women in battleground states.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices.
