EMILYs List Congratulates Janet Mills on Her Reelection as Governor of Maine

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Gov. Janet Mills on her reelection as governor of Maine. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Gov. Janet Mills has been a champion for women and working families for her entire career, and her leadership as governor of Maine through the challenges of the pandemic and the gutting of one of Americans’ most fundamental freedoms is unparalleled. EMILYs List is proud to congratulate Gov. Mills on her reelection, and we know that she will do everything in her power to protect Mainers’ reproductive rights in her next term.”

Gov. Janet Mills is an experienced leader and an outstanding public servant running for reelection to continue fighting for Maine working families. She prosecuted major crimes as an assistant attorney general and co-founded the Maine Women’s Lobby to give vulnerable women who had survived domestic violence a powerful voice in the state legislature. When Mills stepped up to run for office for the first time, she made history as the first woman to serve as a district attorney in all of New England. She went on to successfully run for the Maine House of Representatives and served as a powerful champion for Maine working families. Mills was elected Maine’s attorney general in 2008 and is the first and only woman ever to hold that office. Maine had never before elected a woman governor until Mills became the first in 2018.

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested more than $100,000 in statewide broadcast and digital programming.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
