EMILYs List Congratulates Emilia Sykes on Election to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Emilia Sykes on her election to Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is thrilled that trailblazing, pro-choice champion Emilia Sykes has been elected to represent Ohio’s 13th Congressional District. Sykes is a committed advocate for her community with a record of working across the aisle to secure critical results for her constituents, and we cannot wait to see what she accomplishes for all Americans in Congress. We’re proud to stand alongside this ‘rising star’ as we work to restore abortion access in Ohio and across the country.”

Emilia Sykes grew up in Akron, Ohio as the daughter of two elected officials. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Kent State University and received a Juris Doctor with a certificate in family law and a master of public health from the University of Florida Levin College of Law and the College of Public Health and Health Professions, respectively. She was first elected to represent Ohio’s 34th House District in 2014 and made history as Ohio’s first Black woman lawmaker under the age of 30. In 2019, she was elected House minority leader of the Ohio House of Representatives. In 2020, she was awarded the Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award by EMILYs List, which celebrates extraordinary women serving in state or local office.

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested $350,000 in a television and digital program illustrating the dangerous positions on abortion held by Sykes’ opponent in this race.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
