EMILYs List Congratulates Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill on Advancing to the General Election in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill on advancing to the general election in the election for New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Whether at the Naval Academy as a Navy helicopter pilot, as a prosecutor who kept New Jersey safe, or as congresswoman representing New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District, Rep. Mikie Sherrill has always done what’s right for the people she serves. She has fought to make health care more affordable for New Jerseyans, invest in critical infrastructure to fix the state’s roads and bridges, lower taxes and get costs under control for middle-class families, and will always fight to protect reproductive freedom. EMILYs List is thrilled to support Rep. Sherrill as she seeks reelection to keep serving the American people.”

Rep. Mikie Sherrill graduated from the United States Naval Academy and spent nearly a decade on active duty in the United States Navy, where she served as a helicopter pilot. After leaving the Navy in 2003, Sherrill went on to earn her law degree from Georgetown University and she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey to continue her career of service. She prosecuted federal cases and advised law enforcement on investigations as an assistant U.S. attorney before she decided to run for office for the first time after the 2016 election. Sherrill lives in Montclair with her husband Jason, also a Navy veteran, and their four children.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
