EMILYs List Congratulates Cindy Axne on Her Victory in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated EMILYs List candidate Cindy Axne on being elected to represent Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is excited to congratulate Cindy Axne on her victory in Iowa’s 3rd District, which flipped this important seat from red to blue. As a small business owner and community activist, Cindy has long been a champion of equality in her community, fighting for economic opportunity for all Iowans. Her family’s experience struggling to pay maternity medical costs — resorting to selling possessions on eBay to make ends meet — spoke to many families across the 3rd District, particularly as she spoke passionately about access to affordable, quality care. As one of the first women to represent Iowa in the U.S. House, Cindy will continue to fight for the women and working families of her state.”

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested $268,000 in the primary on TV, digital, and in the mail. In the general election, Women Vote invested $123,000 in a direct mail program. Women Vote also contributed to MoveOn.org’s Real Voter Voices digital campaign supporting Cindy Axne.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
