EMILYs List Congratulates Chrissy Houlahan on Advancing to the General Election in Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Chrissy Houlahan on advancing to the general election in Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Rep. Chrissy Houlahan has already proven that she has what it takes to be the leader that the people of Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District need at this crucial time in the history of our democracy. Rep. Houlahan’s commitment to protecting reproductive health care, ensuring voting rights, and lowering living costs for Pennsylvanians and all Americans speaks for itself, and EMILYs List is thrilled to be supporting Rep. Houlahan in her bid for a third term in Congress.”
Rep. Chrissy Houlahan is a veteran and business leader running for reelection to Congress to fight for Pennsylvania working families. Her story is uniquely American: Houlahan’s father, a Holocaust survivor, came to America with his widowed mother seeking safety and opportunity. He joined the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of captain and teaching Houlahan the importance of service. She attended Stanford on an ROTC scholarship, and went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force before going on to earn her master’s degree from MIT and growing and running a successful business. In 2011, Houlahan took a year to teach 11th grade chemistry in North Philadelphia through Teach for America. She has served as president, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer of Springboard Collaborative, an educational organization focused on early childhood literacy. Houlahan felt called to run for office for the first time after the 2016 election. “I never thought I would run for elected office, but service does not stop when you leave the Armed Forces,” she has said. In 2018, she became the first woman ever to be elected to represent Pennsylvania's 6th Congressional District. Houlahan lives with her husband, Bart, in Chester County, where they raised their grown daughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
