EMILYs List Congratulates Angie Craig on Her Reelection to Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Angie Craig on her reelection to Minnesota’s 2nd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Rep. Angie Craig has been a fighter for justice during her time in Congress, working hard to ensure that women, the LGBTQ+ community, and working families are protected and that reproductive rights are defended. Since becoming the first openly lesbian mother in the United States House, Craig has consistently fought to improve the lives of her constituents, and EMILYs List is thrilled that she will be able to continue to do so for another term.”

Rep. Angie Craig grew up in a mobile home park, one of three kids raised by a single mom who worked while going to school to earn her college degree. Craig’s mom taught her that if she worked hard, she could grow up to be anything she wanted to be — and Craig believed her. Craig worked two jobs to keep up with the cost of her education, and graduated from a state college. She began her career as a newspaper reporter then worked her way up in business over fifteen years to eventually lead a workforce of 16,000 employees for a major Minnesota manufacturer. As a former Fortune 500 company executive, Craig helped create jobs, empowered women and veterans to advance in their careers, and created workplace policies to promote diversity and inclusion. In 2000, Craig’s fight for custody of her adopted son led to a landmark ruling making it possible for other LGBTQ+ couples to adopt. As a leader in the Minnesota business community, Craig has been a powerful advocate for marriage equality in the state. Our country had never before had an openly lesbian mother in the House, and Craig’s 2018 victory gave LGBTQ+ families a new voice in the halls of power. She and her wife are proud to have raised their four sons in Minnesota and embrace the state’s values of family, community, and caring for each other — values Craig is proud to bring to Congress.

Women Vote, EMILY's List's independent expenditure arm, invested nearly $95,000 in a television program to protect incumbent Rep. Angie Craig, educating Minnesota voters on Tyler Kistner’s dangerous views on abortion.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
