FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Angela Alsobrooks on her victory to represent Maryland in the United States Senate. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:

“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Angela Alsobrooks on her historic victory to become  Maryland’s first Black woman U.S. senator. Marylanders had an important choice to make and they delivered. We are honored to have supported her in this journey and look forward to witnessing her fight to restore our reproductive freedoms, ensure affordable health care for all Americans, and protect our democracy in the U.S. Senate.”

Angela Alsobrooks is a proven leader and current County Executive for Prince George’s County. She was the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the position in Maryland’s history. Alsobrooks also served as the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County, where she worked to reduce youth truancy and violent crime. Alsobrooks’ election to the U.S. Senate makes her the second woman and first Black woman to hold the U.S. Senate seat representing Maryland.

EMILYs List’s independent expenditure arm, Women Vote, invested a total of $5.4 million in the general election for Alsobrooks. Women Vote was the first group to air television ads highlighting Larry Hogan’s extreme anti-abortion record, including vetoing legislation that expanded access to abortion in Maryland. During her primary election, Women Vote was the largest outside spender in the race, investing $2.65 million in a robust television and digital campaign in support of Alsobrooks.

The EMILYs List community also contributed nearly $585,000 for Angela Alsobrooks this cycle.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
