EMILYs List Congratulates Angela Alsobrooks on Her Primary Victory in the Maryland U.S. Senate Election
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Angela Alsobrooks on her primary victory and advancing to the general election to represent Maryland in the U.S. Senate. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Angela Alsobrooks is an experienced, groundbreaking leader, and EMILYs List is proud to congratulate her on her primary victory. Maryland has a stark choice to make in the general election, and Angela is the best candidate to defeat Larry Hogan and the extreme, abortion-banning Republicans that recruited him to join their caucus. EMILYs List is thrilled to stand with Alsobrooks in the general election to protect this vital Senate seat and make history by electing her to be Maryland’s first Black Senator and only the fourth Black woman to serve in the chamber ever. We are proud to support her in this historic moment.”
Angela Alsobrooks is a proven leader and lifelong Marylander running for an open U.S. Senate seat to bring her experience and leadership to a chamber where she will be a catalyst for change. Alsobrooks currently serves as County Executive for Prince George’s County. She is the first woman to hold the position and the first Black woman elected to the position in Maryland’s history. Previously, she served as the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County, where she worked to reduce youth truancy and violent crime. Alsobrooks, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., graduated with her bachelor’s degree in public policy from Duke University, earned her J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law, and now lives in Upper Marlboro with her daughter, Alex. If elected, Alsobrooks would become the second woman and first Black woman to hold the U.S. Senate seat representing Maryland.
EMILYs List’s independent expenditure arm, Women Vote, was the largest outside spender in this race, investing $2.65 million in a robust television and digital campaign for Maryland’s Senate race in support of Alsobrooks.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
