EMILYs List Celebrates Pride Month

June 1, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement celebrating the start of Pride Month:

“As we usher in Pride Month, EMILYs List joyfully recognizes the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities and the many remarkable Democratic pro-choice women who identify as LGBTQ+. They boldly chose to run for office in the face of overwhelming adversity, and their continued commitment to trailblazing for others is an inspiration to all Americans. Pride Month began a protest against violence and marginalization – a courageous demand for justice – and it continues to be both a celebration of identity and a call to action.

“LGBTQ+ women who run to change the world do so at a time when extremist Republicans threaten not only their constituents’ fundamental freedoms, but also their own. These Republicans have made it clear that their aim is not just to ban abortion — it is to take away all Americans’ right to bodily autonomy and to determine the course of their lives and their families, including who to love and build a life with. Like abortion bans, threats to LGBTQ+ rights are a direct assault on bodily autonomy, and EMILYs List remains committed to supporting the brave LGBTQ+ Democratic pro-choice women who courageously step up to run for office. Their leadership is vital in our fight for a more just and inclusive world”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
