EMILYs List Celebrates Democratic Pro-Choice Majority in New Mexico State House

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, celebrates the Democratic pro-choice majority officially maintaining control of the New Mexico state House. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Protecting the pro-choice majority in the New Mexico state House is critical in ensuring that this abortion safe haven remains open for its residents and those from out of state that have turned to the Land of Enchantment for abortion care. Republicans have been chipping away at our reproductive rights state by state, law by law, chamber by chamber and EMILYs List is thrilled that together with the campaigns of pro-choice champions, local organizers, and allies we have been able to protect the state House and therefore the reproductive freedom of people across the region.”

As we continue to wait for additional results, EMILYs List congratulates the following candidates on their elections and reelections to the New Mexico state House:

  • Cynthia Borrego (NM-HD17)
  • Janelle Anyanonu (NM-HD19)
  • Meredith Dixon (NM-HD20)
  • Elizabeth “Liz” Thomson (NM-HD24)
  • Eleanor Chavez (NM-HD26)

  • Joy Garratt (NM-HD29)
  • Natalie Figueroa (NM-HD30)

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
