EMILYs List Calls on Governor Hogan to Denounce MD Republican’s Trump-like Personal Attack
October 13, 2017
Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, called on Governor Larry Hogan to denounce a prominent Maryland Republican's Trump-like personal attack against newly-announced Democratic gubernatorial candidate Maya Rockeymoore Cummings.
According to a Washington Post report, prominent Maryland Republican and former U.S. Senate candidate Kathy Szeliga “wrote on her Facebook page: 'Elijah Cumming’s wife running for MD gov. – she likes fancy words – ‘minutiae’ to let us know how smart she is […]”
Hogan endorsed Szeliga's U.S. Senate run last year, claiming that Szeliga “understands the issues of everyday Marylanders” and added “I believe she will make an outstanding U.S. senator.” Szeliga said that she “shared” Hogan's values.
“These kind of personal attacks are exactly the type of divisive tactics that we see from Donald Trump's playbook, and Governor Larry Hogan needs to immediately denounce his fellow Maryland Republican,” said Vice President of Campaigns at EMILY's List Lucinda Guinn. “Standing by and doing nothing is unacceptable.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
