EMILYs List Announces Over 10,000 Women Have Signed Up to Run for Office Since Election Day 2016
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, announced that since Election Day over 10,000 pro-choice Democratic women have contacted EMILYs List looking to run for office. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Over ten thousand women isn’t a ripple – it’s a wave. The thousands of women who have reached out to EMILYs List since the election are a testament to the energy, determination, and resistance we’ve seen from Day One of Donald Trump’s presidency. We’ll continue harnessing this energy to make electoral change by identifying opportunities for women to run and win at all levels of government. Now more than ever we need pro-choice Democratic women in office to stand up for our fundamental American values. With more than three decades of experience recruiting, training, and electing powerful women candidates to office, EMILYs List is more than ready to lead this fight.”
“For women, running for office is a direct response to the dangerous agenda pushed by a president and Republican Party determined to turn back the clock on women’s progress. Women everywhere are alarmed at the GOP’s attacks on their health care, on immigrant families, on refugees, on the environment, and on their economic security. In working with EMILYs List, these thousands of women are fighting to ensure their voices are heard at decision-making tables in communities across the country. Republicans everywhere should sit up and take notice – because this is only the beginning.”
EMILY’s List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILY’s List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
