EMILYs List Statement on Roe v. Wade Anniversary
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow marks 52 years since the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade established abortion as a constitutional right. Republican-appointed justices overturned this long-held decision in June 2022, opening the door for harsh state abortion bans nationwide. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Republicans have learned one thing since eliminating Roe: their opposition to abortion is politically dangerous. Facing the outrage of Americans who have felt the devastating impact of their agenda, they now know better than to draw attention to their efforts to ban care, but those attacks on our rights are still in full throttle. Republicans have wasted no time pushing restrictions after the election — from attempts to overturn abortion protections passed by the majority of voters in Missouri, to pushing care further out of reach for rape survivors in Indiana.
“As we head into the second Trump administration, Democratic women will lead the fight to protect our rights. Over the last two and a half years, these women have been a frontline of defense for abortion access, putting up safety rails against these exact kinds of attempts to restrict care and criminalize patients. With their leadership, we have an opportunity to begin charting a path out of the health care crisis Republicans manufactured across this country.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Over nearly 40 years, EMILYs List has raised nearly $950 million to help Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the most impactful independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 192 women to the House, 29 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,600 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
