EMILYs List Statement on Kamala Harris’ Historic Campaign for President of the United States
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C – Today Vice President Kamala Harris gave her concession speech at Howard University for her presidential campaign. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement in response:
“Today is a devastating day, but we remain grateful for Kamala Harris, and her leadership throughout her career. Facing incredible headwinds and a challenging environment, Kamala Harris used her campaign to do what she’s done throughout her life: stand up for all of us, fight for our rights and freedoms, and be a true leader for the people. While we are heartbroken at this loss and what it means for the people and issues we care most about, we will continue Vice President Harris’ fight for a New Way Forward in the months and years to come. Sixty-seven million Americans – and counting – responded to Vice President Harris’ vision and chose progress at the ballot box, and we will ensure that their voices are heard as we move forward.
“It’s not lost on us the deep racism and sexism that Kamala Harris was forced to endure on the campaign trail. EMILYs List exists to fight these challenges for women candidates and we will continue to fight for a more representative democracy for generations to come. Kamala Harris has always reminded us that it hurts to break glass ceilings. At every stage of her career, she’s been a groundbreaker, and now, she has done her part in continuing to chip away at the highest glass ceiling in politics. We know one day we will shatter it into a million pieces.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
