“This is not democracy” EMILYs List Responds to Senate Republicans’ Secret Health Care Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Senate Republicans released a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:

“This bill is a cruel, un-American attack on women, families, and the millions of Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act for life-saving health care. That Mitch McConnell and his friends wrote this bill in secret, with no input from Democrats, women senators, or – most importantly – the public, is unconscionable. By continuing to put party over the American people, Republicans are making it increasingly clear that their loyalty lies with Donald Trump, not hardworking families. The majority of Americans support the Affordable Care Act and do not want to see it repealed. It is sad that Senate Republicans have sunk to a point where they would abandon the people they claim to represent in order to answer the demands of a historically unpopular president.”
 
“Now, more than ever, we need more pro-choice Democratic women in office to fight back against these harmful partisan attacks that disproportionately affect our children and working families. It is unacceptable that a bill that impacts millions of Americans was purposefully written behind closed doors – away from the people impacted most. This is not democracy. The American people – and women in particular – will not stand for this betrayal.”
