EMILYs List Endorses State Sen. Nellie Pou for New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed state Sen. Nellie Pou for New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“State Sen. Nellie Pou is a groundbreaking leader committed to fighting for the people of New Jersey. Her track record proves that when she sets out to make New Jersey better, she gets the job done. EMILYs List is proud to endorse this reproductive rights champion because we know she will continue her great work in Congress. We look forward to supporting her in this election as she sets out to become New Jersey’s first Latina member of Congress.”
State Sen. Nellie Pou served in the New Jersey Assembly from 1997 to 2012. She was elected to the state Senate in 2011 and was reelected in 2013, 2017, 2021, and 2023. She was the first woman and the first Latina elected to represent the 35th Legislative District. Pou is a strong advocate for social justice and human rights. She sponsored a law that broadened the definition of human trafficking and increased penalties, introduced legislation — now law — that would provide automatic representation to juveniles by the Office of the Public Defender if they are under 18 years old, and sponsored legislation that added new protections for sexual assault victims. Pou is a champion for our fundamental freedoms and sponsored legislation that required the New Jersey Department of Health to create a website with information on reproductive rights. She is also the immediate past president of the National Caucus of Hispanic State Legislators.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
