EMILYs List Responds to President Trump’s Executive Order on Immigration
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today President Donald Trump issued an executive order banning immigration from six Muslim-majority countries. The following is a statement by Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List:
“By signing this executive order, President Trump has once again prioritized a dangerous agenda that goes against all that we stand for as Americans. Our country was founded on the ideals of freedom and equality for all, and this latest action proves Trump’s willingness to undermine these fundamental American values. This executive order is not only unconstitutional; it makes our country less safe – showing once again that Trump puts his own interests ahead of the safety of the people he claims to represent.”
“This Muslim ban is both outrageous and consistent with this administration’s cruel, undemocratic policies concerning immigration and immigrant families. Trump’s administration has threatened to forcefully separate mothers from their children in detention centers, detained a woman seeking court protection against domestic violence, and still insists on building a wall that would tear apart countless families.”
“Make no mistake – women will not back down. We will continue to fight back against Donald Trump and his administration’s dangerous actions every step of the way and elect more pro-choice Democratic women to office who will stand up against his un-American agenda.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have trained nearly 10,000 women to run and helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color – including every single Latina, African American, and Asian American Democratic congresswoman currently serving.
