EMILYs List Congratulates Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on Her Primary Victory in the Florida U.S. Senate Election
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on her primary victory in the Florida U.S. Senate election. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell on this primary victory for Florida’s U.S. Senate seat. Mucarsel-Powell is ready to stand up against anti-choice extremist Sen. Rick Scott, who constantly lies to voters about his extreme abortion views, including his willingness to put IVF at risk. We need a Democratic pro-choice champion like Mucarsel-Powell in the Senate to protect our fundamental freedoms and EMILYs List is proud to stand with her through this election and elect Florida’s first Latina to the Senate.”
Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a South American immigrant and former representative for Florida’s 26th Congressional District. Born in Ecuador, she became the first South American-born immigrant to serve in the U.S. Congress when she was elected in 2018 with the full support of EMILYs List. Mucarsel-Powell came to America at a young age with her family, worked her way through high school and college, and went on to work for Florida International University’s Colleges of Health and Medicine as associate dean. Since serving in office, she has also served as a senior advisor for Giffords, advocating for gun safety reform nationwide. She lives in Miami with her husband, Robert, and three children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
