EMILYs List Statement on Senate Republicans Blocking Basic Abortion Protections

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Senate Republicans blocked a bill sponsored by Democratic pro-choice champion Sen. Patty Murray, and co-sponsored by every EMILYs List-backed Senator, that would have codified the protections of Roe v. Wade into law. This comes after Republicans blocked a series of bills yesterday that would have established basic protections for abortion access and patients seeking care across the country. These included the freedom for patients to travel to access care, protections for doctors caring for those patients, and support for training more abortion care providers. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Republicans don’t believe in the most basic human rights for Americans. This week, they again blocked even the most simple protections for Americans needing care. They won’t stop until they ban abortion, IVF, and birth control. It’s not only extreme, it’s out of step with the interests of the American people.
“The stakes have never been higher. The only path forward for voters who want a future with our rights intact is a Democratic pro-choice majority in Congress and in states across the country this November, led by women who will defend and restore abortion access.”
EMILYs List-endorsed candidates up for reelection, including Sens. Jacky Rosen and Tammy Baldwin, co-sponsored the Reproductive Freedom for Women Act that was blocked today, in addition to Sens. Maria Cantwell, Kirsten Gillibrand, Mazie Hirono, Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren.
