EMILYs List Endorses State Representative Dr. Maxine Dexter to Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed State Representative Dr. Maxine Dexter to Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is proud to endorse Dr. Maxine Dexter for Oregon’s 3rd Congressional District. In the Oregon House of Representatives, she worked to bring an end to homelessness, invested in mental health resources, and addressed the opioid epidemic. Dexter is also committed to protecting abortion access and will stand up against anti-abortion extremists in the U.S. House. We are confident in her ability to work on behalf of all Oregonians and EMILYs List is thrilled to support her.”
Dr. Maxine Dexter is a physician at Kaiser Permanente in Portland, Oregon. She attended the University of Washington, where she received a bachelor’s degree in political science and communication, and later received her medical degree. In 2020, Dexter was appointed and later elected to House District 33 in the Oregon House of Representatives. During her time in the Oregon House, she introduced legislation to expand access to naloxone and allow first responders to distribute the drug to the general public and decriminalize fentanyl test strips. The bill was signed into law on August 8, 2023. That year, she was appointed to serve as the chair of the House Committee on Housing and Homelessness, where she helped pass a $200 million spending bill on housing and homelessness issues. Dexter also serves on the House Committee on Behavioral Health and Health Care, and the House Committee on Emergency Management, General Government, and Veterans. She is a champion for reproductive rights in the Oregon state Legislature and has supported a bill to protect doctors and medical professionals from prosecution for providing abortions or gender-affirming care, including prohibiting the Oregon courts from working with other jurisdictions to impede individuals receiving or providing abortion care.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
