FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Luz Rivas on advancing to the general election for California’s 29th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is excited to congratulate Luz Rivas on her advancement to the general election for California’s 29th Congressional District. Her relentless commitment to advocacy continues to prove that she is a fearless pro-choice champion fighting for reproductive freedom. We are confident that Rivas is the candidate who will fervently represent her community in the U.S. House and remain dedicated to safeguarding reproductive rights in California and nationwide.”
Luz Rivas is a nonprofit founder and former electrical engineer currently serving as the assemblywoman for California’s 43rd Assembly District. She was elected to the office in 2018 with the full support of EMILYs List. Prior to serving in the state Assembly, Rivas worked for Motorola before founding DIY Girls, a San Fernando Valley nonprofit organization that helps girls interested in science and engineering careers. In the state Assembly, Rivas has focused on supporting underrepresented communities, promoting environmental justice, and securing funding for critical projects in infrastructure, education, and health care. She is a second generation immigrant and a graduate of MIT and Harvard who grew up in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and is now running to champion her community in Congress.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
