EMILYs List Statement on State of the Union Address

March 7, 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a preview to President Biden’s State of the Union address, EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler offered the following statement:

“This year’s State of the Union address comes during a particularly critical time for our reproductive rights. Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, we have seen very different reactions from our elected leaders. Republicans across the country are trying to introduce more abortion bans and restrictions, expanding beyond the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision to work to punish doctors, patients and more, to limit IVF and contraception. They have made clear that they want to control our lives and our decisions.

“The Biden-Harris administration has worked tirelessly to find new ways to protect our rights and support access to reproductive care, and we know that they will continue to do so in the coming year.

“The question now is what the state of our union and our reproductive rights will be next year – and the answer depends completely on who we elect to the White House and to Congress this November. At EMILYs List, we are committed to electing more of Democratic women who will fight for us and work to enshrine our rights, not candidates like Trump and his GOP allies, who will enact a federal abortion ban if they take control.”

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
