EMILYs List Endorses Luz Maria Rivas for Election to California’s 29th Congressional District
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Assemblywoman Luz Maria Rivas for election to California’s 29th Congressional District. EMILYs List Interim President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“Luz Maria Rivas has been a proven advocate for her community and an assemblywoman the people of her district can trust to deliver results and fight for their rights. EMILYs List is proud to endorse her for Congress because we know that she will continue that work in the U.S. House and help to achieve a Democratic pro-choice majority that will protect reproductive freedom in California and across the country. Rivas is ready to hit the ground running on day one, and we look forward to seeing everything she will continue to accomplish for Southern Californians.”
Luz Maria Rivas is a nonprofit founder and former electrical engineer currently serving as the assemblywoman for California’s 43rd Assembly District. She was elected to the office in 2018 with the full support of EMILYs List. Prior to serving in the state Assembly, Rivas worked for Motorola before founding DIY Girls, a San Fernando Valley nonprofit organization that helps girls interested in science and engineering careers. In the state Assembly, Rivas has focused on supporting underrepresented communities, promoting environmental justice, and securing funding for critical projects in infrastructure, education, and health care. She is a second generation immigrant and a graduate of MIT and Harvard who grew up in the Northeast San Fernando Valley and is now running to champion her community in Congress.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
