EMILYs List Statement on the U.S. Supreme Court Decision to Review Mifepristone Case

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review the Fifth Circuit’s decision in FDA v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine. This case challenges the FDA’s decades-long approval of mifepristone, the first of a two-part series of drugs used in medication abortion. The Court will hear oral arguments early next year, and until a decision is issued mifepristone will remain available. EMILYs List Interim President Jessica Mackler released the following statement regarding the decision:
“Early next year, the U.S. Supreme Court will have the opportunity to protect a safe and effective medication approved by the FDA for over 20 years. As we witness the most consequential case for the fight to protect reproductive freedom since Roe v. Wade was overturned, we know that access to medication abortion has never been more integral.
“The majority of Americans want abortion access, yet extreme Republicans are working to rip this right away. They are not content with just overturning Roe v. Wade. This case is yet another example of these extremists inserting themselves into our private health care decisions, and playing politics with our bodies, lives, and futures. We won’t stand for it.
“If there’s anything the Supreme Court has taught us, it’s that women are not without electoral power. While Republicans work to ensure abortion is banned nationwide, EMILYs List is going to continue to exercise our power by helping elect Democratic pro-choice women who will fight to defend access to reproductive rights across the country.”
