EMILYs List Endorses Sheila Jackson Lee for Mayor of Houston, Texas
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee for mayor of Houston, Texas. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee has been delivering for Texans for over 30 years, and working to create an America where everyone has the resources and support they need to thrive. She has stood up to extremist Republicans in Congress who want to take away our rights, and is a steadfast champion for women, children, and families. EMILYs List is proud to endorse Jackson Lee for Houston mayor, and we know she will be a leader that her city can truly count on.”
Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee is the representative for Texas’ 18th Congressional District, where she has served the people of her community faithfully since 1995. During her time in Congress, Jackson Lee has delivered results time and time again for Texas and for all Americans — she was the author and lead sponsor of the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act that established June 19 as a federal holiday, and she was also the author of the Violence Against Women Act. Before being elected to Congress, Jackson Lee was a municipal judge from 1987 to 1990 and a Houston City Council member from 1990 to 1994. She was named by Congressional Quarterly as one of the 50 most effective members of Congress and one of the ten most influential legislators in the U.S. House of Representatives by U.S. News and World Report. Jackson Lee is ready to take her extensive experience fighting for Texans in Congress to the office of Houston’s mayor with the full support of EMILYs List.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised $850 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure operations for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country’s first woman as vice president, 175 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 20 governors, and over 1,500 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
