WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the first woman speaker of the House, announced she is stepping down from the U.S. House leadership. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
 
“We thank Speaker Pelosi for her nearly two decades of selfless service to our country and to democracy as speaker of the House and House minority leader. As the first woman to hold the gavel, and the second highest-ranking woman in the U.S. government, Speaker Pelosi led the House of Representatives with a vision to fight corruption and ensure quality health care and jobs for all. As second in line to the presidency, under her leadership, Democrats fought for progress in the lives of working families all over the country. As Speaker, she proved to be a steadfast leader in passing the most significant laws in recent history, from President Barack Obama's signature health insurance measure and President Joe Biden's climate change initiative. There is no one who has worked harder for the American people and the future of our nation.
