EMILYs List Congratulates Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on Her Victory in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Marie Gluesenkamp Perez on her victory in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is thrilled to congratulate Marie Gluesenkamp Perez today. Her victory represents triumph over right wing extremism and government overreach into personal medical decisions, and because of her election the people of Washington’s 3rd Congressional District will truly have a fighter representing them in Congress. Perez has been an unrelenting pro-choice advocate, and we are confident that she will uphold equity and justice for Washingtonians and all Americans.”
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez is a fifth-generation Washingtonian, small business owner, and pro-choice mother running for Congress. Perez has deep roots in Washington State: her great-great-grandfather helped build the state’s Capitol building, and her own parents met at Western Washington University after her father immigrated from Mexico. Perez attended Reed College. She now owns an independent auto repair shop with her husband, Dean, and they are proud recipients of an SBA loan that enabled them to purchase their building in 2018 and continue paying their employees a living wage. Perez and her husband face increasing costs for their family, and pay for insurance to cover their infant son but cannot afford coverage for themselves. They take their baby to work with them each day because they lack local affordable options that fit their needs. Perez has said she’s running for Congress because she’s “exactly the kind of working class Washingtonian that has been left behind in this economy and frankly ignored by the political extremes in our nation’s Capitol.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
