EMILYs List Congratulates California State Treasurer Fiona Ma on her Reelection

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, celebrates California State Treasurer Fiona Ma on her victorious reelection. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Fiona Ma made history when she was the first woman of color to be elected state treasurer in California. Since then, she has worked tirelessly for Californians. From growing the state’s affordable housing and homeless housing programs to quickly responding to the COVID-19 pandemic by expanding small businesses and health facility resources, Ma is a proven leader we can trust to champion Californians’ civil and reproductive rights. We congratulate her on her reelection and are proud to stand by her.”

Prior to being elected as California state treasurer, Fiona Ma was an elected member of the California Board of Equalization. While she was the board's selected chairperson, she helped lead the biggest reforms for accountability and efficiency in the agency’s history.  Fiona Ma served on the State Assembly and as speaker pro tempore from 2010 to 2012. She’s authored over 60 bills that were successfully signed into law including her bill to ban toxic chemicals in baby products. Ma was the first woman of color to be elected California state treasurer and the first Certified Public Accountant (CPA) to be elected into the position.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, works to elect Democratic pro-choice women up and down the ballot and across the country with a goal of fighting for our rights and our communities. Our work is centered around a fundamental vision: Run. Win. Change the World. EMILYs List has raised over $700 million in service to that vision and has helped Democratic women win competitive elections by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running one of the largest independent expenditure campaigns for Democrats, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,400 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Visit www.emilyslist.org for more information.
