EMILYs List Congratulates Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan on Reelection Victory

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan on winning her reelection in Minnesota. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:

“Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan made history when she became the first Indigenous woman to be elected lieutenant governor in Minnesota and is currently the highest ranking Indigenous woman in a state government. She has been a fierce champion for children, working families and women’s rights. She is a strong advocate for underrepresented communities, especially when it comes to their access to reproductive health care. We are proud to stand by this pro-choice champion and celebrate her victory in this general election.” 

Peggy Flanagan is a St. Louis Park, MN native and graduate of St. Louis Park public schools. She attended the University of Minnesota and went on to serve on the Minneapolis Board of Education from 2005 to 2009. She later worked at Wellstone Action and the Children’s Defense Fund — Minnesota. She was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2015 and later helped form the People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus. She was elected as Minnesota’s 50th lieutenant governor in 2018. Flanagan is an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and is only the second Indigenous woman in the nation elected to a statewide executive office, and the only one currently serving in executive office.
