EMILY's List Endorses Kathy Manning for Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Kathy Manning for reelection to represent North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is proud to announce our continued support for Rep. Kathy Manning as she runs for reelection in North Carolina’s 6th Congressional District. Rep. Manning has a distinguished record of leadership in service of others, working as an immigration attorney, serving as the first woman to lead one of the world’s largest charitable, faith-based organizations, and leading efforts to help revitalize and rebuild her community after the Great Recession. Rep. Kathy Manning is a tireless advocate of reproductive rights and equal access to health care. In Congress, she serves as a member of the Pro-Choice Caucus and the Black Women’s Maternal Health Caucus, working to address the maternal mortality crisis while defending continued access to vital services. EMILYs List is proud to stand beside Rep. Kathy Manning as she continues advocating for a brighter future for all North Carolinians.”
Kathy Manning’s great-grandparents came to the United States fleeing religious persecution, and she has said she was “raised with the understanding that I have an obligation to give back.” After graduating from Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School, Manning moved with her husband to his hometown of Greensboro, NC in 1987, where they have raised their three children. A former immigration attorney, she left the major law firm where she had been a partner for 15 years to start her own practice. Manning has worked tirelessly to serve others and was the first woman to lead The Jewish Federations of North America. She also helped those who lost their jobs during the Great Recession access food, health care, mortgage assistance, and job retraining. A powerful advocate for North Carolinians, she has worked to provide school readiness programs for vulnerable children, to help students in her community access higher education, and to help seniors live with dignity.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
