EMILYs List Endorses Rep. Marie Newman For Reelection
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rep. Marie Newman to represent Illinois’ 6th Congressional District. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Since her election to Congress in 2020, Congresswoman Marie Newman has fought tirelessly on behalf of her constituents. A champion for families, Rep. Newman is an advocate for paid parental leave, small business economic support, and high quality health care for all. She is also a champion for reproductive rights, voting rights, gun violence prevention , and LGBTQ+ rights. There is no doubt that Congresswoman Newman will continue her steadfast public service when she is elected to represent Illinois' 6th District. EMILYs List is proud to stand with Rep. Newman in this pivotal moment.”
Marie Newman worked at one of the largest ad agencies in the country and rose to become a partner at age 31. Driven to tackle new challenges and innovate, she left to start her own business and established herself as a successful entrepreneur. The mother of a child who experienced severe bullying in school, Newman founded Team Up to Stop Bullying, a coalition of 70 nonprofits, and authored a solutions-focused book to encourage anti-bullying policies and promote inclusion in schools across the country. After many years of volunteering on campaigns, she stepped up to run for the first time after the 2016 election. She was elected to Congress to represent IL-03 in 2020. Born and raised in the Chicago area, Newman and her husband, Jim, live in La Grange with their two children.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
