EMILYs List Endorses Christy Smith for Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Christy Smith for election to represent California’s 27th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“With anti-choice extremists organizing to pass a national abortion ban and restrict reproductive freedom across the country, it is more important than ever that we maintain a Democratic pro-choice majority in the House of Representatives and elect pro-choice champions like Christy Smith to office. Smith has been a prolific state legislator, authoring laws to uplift working families, make education more affordable, and help survivors of human trafficking access compensation. EMILYs List is proud to stand by her, and we know that she is the leader the people of California’s 27th Congressional District need during these challenging times.”
Christy Smith is an experienced public servant running for Congress to fight for Californians. Christy Smith’s family settled in southern California when she was 10years old after moving around while her father was enlisted in the U.S. Army. She attended College of the Canyons before transferring to UCLA and receiving a degree in political science. Smith began her career in public service as an analyst for the U.S. Department of Education before serving on her children’s school PTA and founding the Valencia Valley Technological Education Foundation. She went on to serve two terms, including as president, on the Newhall School Board and was elected to represent the 38th Assembly District in 2018. Smith lives in Santa Clarita, California with her husband and their two daughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
