EMILYs List Congratulates Haley Stevens on Advancing to the General Election in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulates Haley Stevens on advancing to the general election in Michigan’s 11th Congressional District. EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler released the following statement:
“Rep. Stevens is a proven champion for Michiganders who has spent her career working to improve the economy, uplift women and families, and protect reproductive freedom. During a time when so many of our basic civil rights are under attack by radical Republican extremists, the people of Michigan’s 11th Congressional District need a representative they can count on to fight for them no matter what — and that representative is Haley Stevens. EMILYs List is proud of all that Stevens has accomplished during her time in office already, and we are thrilled to congratulate her on her primary victory today.”
Haley Stevens is a leader in advanced manufacturing who served as a political appointee under President Obama, serving as chief of staff for the Treasury Department’s Auto Task Force and as a special advisor for the Department of Commerce. She played a key role in restoring the financial stability of the auto industry and helped save thousands of Michigan jobs during the recession. Stevens worked tirelessly to help set up federal offices that contributed to the creation of new jobs for hardworking Michiganders. Prior to serving in Congress, she led a national workforce development program and launched a STEM education initiative for middle and high school students. Born and raised in Oakland County, Stevens is a proud resident of Rochester Hills.
Women Vote, EMILYs List’s independent expenditure arm, invested more than $3.2 million in a multi-channel program in Michigan ahead of the primary election. Over the course of six weeks, Women Vote educated voters about Rep. Stevens’ record as a choice champion and her leadership as chief of staff to President Obama’s Auto Rescue. The multimedia program emphasized her relentless advocacy for Michigan women, her work to reduce gun violence, and her endorsements from organizations like Planned Parenthood and the Detroit Free Press.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 159 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40% of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
