EMILYs List Congratulates Stacey Abrams on Advancing to the General Election in Georgia’s Gubernatorial Election

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Stacey Abrams on advancing to the general election to determine who will serve as Georgia’s next governor. Laphonza Butler, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
 
“There is no one more qualified to lead the state of Georgia as governor than Stacey Abrams. During a time when voting rights and reproductive freedom are being stripped away from Americans, Abrams will take the decisive action needed to restore those rights and freedoms. Abrams has not only the tenacity but the experience and the passion to be that leader, and EMILYs List is confident that she will fight for justice for Georgians and play a crucial role in ensuring that every voter has their voice heard. We look forward to supporting Abrams in the general election and sending a message that is loud and clear: We will not go back.”

Stacey Abrams attended DeKalb County public schools and went on to earn degrees from Spelman College, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin, and Yale Law School. First elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2006, Abrams made history four years later as the first woman to lead either party in the Georgia General Assembly, and the first African American to lead their party in the House of Representatives. 

In 2014, EMILYs List honored Abrams with the first ever Gabrielle Giffords Rising Star Award—named after a woman who exemplifies everything exceptional about American public servants. She ran for governor in 2018, becoming the first Black woman in American history to be nominated by a major party for governor. Following that race, she immediately dedicated her efforts to protecting Georgians’ voting rights and turning Georgia blue in the 2020 elections. Her efforts to recruit, train, elect, and defend Democrats and mobilize and register voters of color were integral to flipping both U.S. Senate seats in Georgia from red to blue.

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates.
