RSVP for 5/13: EMILYs List Hosts Moms Leading the Way Virtual Celebration and Panel Event
EMILYs List highlights the unique power that moms bring to government, politics, and activism.
On Thursday, May 13, EMILYs List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics, will host an event featuring moms in government, politics, and activism, both in and out of elected office. The panelists will discuss how their lived experiences influence the way they advance causes and policies that directly impact moms and their families, how they address social justice issues with their children, and the mother figures that shaped their lives. The event also includes remarks from Rep. Katie Porter (CA-45) and Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez (NM-03).
“Throughout history, mothers have played a large role in shaping the next generation of leaders. This gives mothers a unique power to be leaders themselves,” says Johanna Silva Waki, vice president of training and community engagement.
“As EMILYs List works to elect Democratic pro-choice women to office, we have the privilege of supporting mothers running to better their communities, champion issues that affect children and families, and ensure bodies of legislators reflect the communities they represent.”
The first panel, “Mothering and the Fight for Justice,” consists of author Anna Malaika Tubbs, Nina Perez of MomsRising, Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06), and Sung Yeon Choimorrow of National Asian Pacific American Women’s Forum (NAPAWF). This panel will address the ways in which moms are change agents and how their leadership nurtures and transforms communities.
The second panel, “Running for Office as a Mom,” will share the stories of five mom legislators and show how mothers can run a successful campaign and support their families. Panelists include state Senator Stephanie Chang (MI), Assemblywoman Sabrina Cervantes (CA), state Senator DeAndrea Salvador (NC), state Senator Katy Duhigg (NM), and state Representative Erica Crawley (OH).

EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $700 million to elect Democratic pro-choice women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting and helping build strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, running nearly $50 million in independent expenditures in the last cycle alone, and turning out women voters and voters of color to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect the country's first woman as vice president, 157 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and more than 1,300 women to state and local office. More than 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. After the 2016 election, more than 60,000 women reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state, and national offices. In our effort to elect more women in offices across the country, we have created our Run to Win program, expanded our training program, including a Training Center online, and trained thousands of women.
