EMILYs List Endorses Wendy Davis in Texas’ 21st Congressional District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Wendy Davis for Congress in Texas’ 21st Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“EMILYs List is excited to ‘stand with Wendy’ once again as this champion for Texas women and families runs for Congress. Known nationally for her steadfast advocacy for reproductive rights, Wendy will bring that same principled leadership to representing the 21st District. She is committed to protecting access to affordable health care, lowering prescription drug costs, and boosting economic opportunity for working families.
“Wendy is running against Rep. Chip Roy, an extremist Republican who is running for re-election despite the tides turning against his party in Texas. Rep. Roy has consistently put partisan interests ahead of his constituents and co-sponsored anti-choice legislation that would penalize doctors who help women make their own informed reproductive health care decisions. Wendy will be the representative that Texans deserve fighting for them in Congress and EMILYs List can’t wait to help her win this race.”
Raised by a single mother, Wendy Davis was taught to have a strong work ethic at a young age. She became a mother herself at age 19 and worked her way through community college before graduating at the top of her class from Texas Christian University and with honors from Harvard Law School. Wendy then spent nine years on the Fort Worth City Council and two terms in the Texas State Senate. In 2016, she founded the organization Deeds Not Words to empower young women to get involved in politics. Wendy is the proud mother of two daughters and has two granddaughters.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 48,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
