EMILYs List Congratulates Tampa Mayor-Elect Jane Castor on Historic Victory
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, congratulated Jane Castor on her victory in the run-off election for Tampa mayor. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Tampa Mayor-elect Jane Castor on her historic victory in tonight’s mayoral race. She has served the people of Tampa well as police chief and we’re excited to see what she accomplishes as mayor. As a lifelong Tampa resident with more than 30 years of public service, Jane understands what her community needs to thrive and will work hard to secure greater economic opportunity for all working families. EMILYs List is proud to support Jane and is confident that she will continue to champion policies that support and empower women as the next mayor of Tampa.”
Jane Castor has an impressive record spanning more than 30 years in the Tampa Police Department. Working her way up from a beat cop to the first woman to serve as chief of police, Jane’s leadership has led to a reduction in the city’s crime, a more secure Tampa, and a more accountable police department. As a strong neighborhood ally, she is deeply in touch with each of Tampa’s neighborhoods and has been a skilled and efficient problem solver in respectfully addressing the needs of its most vulnerable residents. Jane is Tampa’s first openly LGBTQ mayor and the first openly LGBTQ woman to lead a major city in Florida.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million dollars and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 46,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
