EMILYs List Endorses Rashida Tlaib in Michigan’s 13th District
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Rashida Tlaib for Congress in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Rashida Tlaib for winning a very competitive primary and running a campaign that’s connecting to voters. EMILYs List is proud to endorse Rashida, a proven champion for her hometown of Detroit. During her three terms as a state representative, she successfully secured more funding for free health clinics, education programs, and Meals on Wheels programs for seniors. In Congress, she will continue fighting for economic justice in her community by working to increase wages, promoting homeownership, and standing up for unions. Rashida made history as the first Muslim woman ever elected to the Michigan Legislature – and now she can do so again as one of the first Muslim women elected to the U.S. Congress.
“Rashida is running for this open seat in a blue district that Democrats must hold onto in order to win back the House. Rashida’s strong grassroots campaign and widespread community support are proof she has what it takes to win this race, and EMILYs List is excited to be standing with her to make history.”
The eldest daughter of Palestinian immigrants, Rashida Tlaib was born and raised in Detroit with her 13 younger siblings. As a state representative, Rashida rose to the position of Democratic Chair of the House Appropriations Committee and helped ensure funding for key health and education initiatives. Following her time in office, she worked as an attorney for Sugar Law Center, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping working communities.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
