EMILY's List Statement on NIFLA v. Becerra
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in a sweeping 5-4 decision in NIFLA v. Becerra, the Supreme Court struck down disclosure requirements for fake health clinics — ruling that California may not require them to tell patients about their lack of medically licensed providers or about women's full range of medical options. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:
“Today's decision will harm women, full stop. The Supreme Court's ruling will allow fake health clinics to continue peddling anti-choice propaganda and misinformation. It will let them lie to vulnerable women, pretend to offer licensed medical providers, and withhold potentially life-saving medical care. I'm sure the far right and Congressional Republicans are celebrating — they relish every opportunity to roll back women's rights. We know that the only way to fix this is to elect pro-choice Democratic women to office who will work in states and in Congress to defend women and families against these attacks on access to health care — and to stop anti-choice extremists from pushing their dangerous agenda even further. Elections matter.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
