EMILYs List Statement on President Trump’s Weaponization of the Justice System Against New York Attorney General Letitia James
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tonight, the Trump-led Justice Department at Donald Trump’s behest indicted New York Attorney General Letitia James simply because she did her job as attorney general. EMILYs List President Jessica Mackler released the following statement:
“This is an unprecedented abuse of power by President Trump and his allies, and dangerous escalation in their campaign to weaponize the Justice Department against those who have dared to hold him accountable.
Attorney General Letitia James has spent her career fighting for justice, integrity, and the rule of law, and this blatantly political prosecution is nothing more than retribution for doing her job. The idea that the sitting president of the United States is directing his Justice Department to bring criminal charges against his perceived political enemies is a direct threat to our democracy and to the independence of our justice system.
When leaders use the power of government to punish their opponents, no one’s rights are safe. Attorney General Letitia James stood up to Trump when few others would — and we stand with her now.”
