How Anti-Choice Are Donald Trump and the GOP? As Today's Speech Will Prove — Very.
Trump's proposal of a domestic gag rule is the latest in a long line of anti-choice attacks from Republicans up and down the ballot
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Donald Trump will speak before anti-choice group Susan B. Anthony List. In his speech, he is expected to officially propose a domestic gag rule barring heath centers that provide abortion services or referrals from receiving federal family planning funds. In response, Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, released the following statement:
“Women have long known that Donald Trump is the most anti-choice president in modern history. From his suggestion that women should face 'some sort of punishment' for having an abortion, to his decisions to implement the global gag rule, repeal the contraceptive mandate, and appoint a wave of anti-choice judges to lifetime positions on our courts, Trump has prioritized an agenda that targets women and their access to reproductive health care. As I'm sure he'll celebrate in his speech today, Trump's proposed domestic gag rule is the latest in a long line of anti-woman attacks from the White House.”
“But it's not just about Trump. Republicans up and down the ballot have been emboldened by his so-called leadership to cheer on these anti-choice policies and launch attacks of their own. Look no further than the unconstitutional abortion bans Republicans pushed for in Louisiana, Iowa, Mississippi, and on Capitol Hill; or congressional Republicans' shameless attempt to slip personhood language into their tax bill. This is why Americans deserve more pro-choice Democratic women in office who will fight back against these dangerous efforts — and why EMILY's List is going to fight tirelessly to elect a wave of our candidates to office in November.”
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates – making them one of the most successful political organizations ever. Our grassroots community of over five million members helps Democratic women wage competitive campaigns – and win. We recruit and train candidates, support strong campaigns, research the issues that impact women and families, and turn out women voters. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 116 women to the House, 23 to the Senate, 12 governors, and over 800 to state and local office. Forty percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. Since the 2016 election, thousands of women and counting have reached out to us about running for office. To harness this energy, EMILYs List has launched Run to Win, an unprecedented effort to get more women to run at the local, state, and national levels.
