EMILYs List Endorses Senator Tina Smith for Re-Election
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, endorsed Senator Tina Smith of Minnesota for re-election. Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILYs List, released the following statement:
“Senator Tina Smith’s successful first year in office proves that when it comes to fighting for Minnesota working families, she’s just getting started. She has been a leader in improving access to quality health care and rural broadband internet, and has worked across the aisle to achieve bipartisan solutions. Senator Smith is a hardworking, effective lawmaker who will continue to be a strong voice for Minnesotans when re-elected.
“Currently serving a two-year term, Senator Smith successfully held this critical seat in a special election in 2018 and has shown she has what it takes to win again. EMILYs List is proud to continue standing with this champion for Minnesota families. Let’s send Senator Smith back to Congress to serve a full term that she’s shown she deserves.”
Raised in a family with a strong tradition of public service, Senator Tina Smith volunteered for campaigns and causes and has served as a vice president of Planned Parenthood of Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Before that, Tina started her own small business in Minnesota. Tina has served as chief of staff to the mayor of Minneapolis, and after a devastating bridge collapse in 2007 she worked tirelessly to secure fast-track funding and rebuild in record time. Before being elected lieutenant governor of Minnesota in 2014, Tina served as chief of staff to Governor Dayton and managed the daily operation of Minnesota state government. Tina lives in Minneapolis with her husband of more than 30 years, Archie, and they are the proud parents of two sons.
EMILYs List, the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has raised over $600 million to elect pro-choice Democratic women candidates. With a grassroots community of over five million members, EMILY's List helps Democratic women win competitive campaigns – across the country and up and down the ballot – by recruiting and training candidates, supporting strong campaigns, researching the issues that impact women and families, and turning out women voters to the polls. Since our founding in 1985, we have helped elect 150 women to the House, 26 to the Senate, 16 governors, and nearly 1,100 women to state and local office. Nearly 40 percent of the candidates EMILYs List has helped elect to Congress have been women of color. During the historic 2017-2018 cycle, EMILYs List raised a record-breaking $110 million dollars and launched a record independent expenditure campaign. We helped elect 34 new women to the House, including 24 red-to-blue victories; enough seats to have delivered the U.S. House majority alone. Since the 2016 election, more than 40,000 women have reached out to EMILY's List about running for office laying the groundwork for the next decade of candidates for local, state and national offices.
